A/B Testing in Salesforce Marketing Cloud (Step-by-Step Guide)
A/B testing is one of the most powerful features in Salesforce Marketing Cloud that helps marketers optimize email performance using real data.
In this blog, I’ll walk you through how I created A/B tests for:
- ✅ Subject Line
- ✅ Preheader
Let’s dive in 👇
📌 Step 1: Create Two Email Variations
The first step is to create two different email versions with:
- Different subject lines
- Different preheaders
- Different content
These variations will be used for testing performance.
![]() |
| Email A |
![]() |
| Email B |
📌 Step 2: Create a New A/B Test
- Go to A/B Testing
- Click on Create New Test
- Give your test a name
- Select Subject Line Test
- Browse and select both email versions
- Enter: "vs Subject Line" for testing
- Click Next
📌 Step 3: Select Recipients
Now choose your audience:
-
Select from:
- List
- Data Extension
- Data Filter
You can also define:
- Publication List
- Suppression List
- Exclusion List
📌 Step 4: Define Test Audience Percentage
- Choose how much of your audience will be used for testing
- We selected: 20%
👉 This means:
- 10% gets Email A
- 10% gets Email B
- Remaining 80% will receive the winning version
📌 Step 5: Define Winner Criteria
Now decide how the winner will be selected:
Available Options:
- Higher Unique Open Rate
- Higher Unique Click-Through Rate
👉 We selected: Higher Unique Open Rate
💡 Tip:
- Use Open Rate → when testing Subject/Preheader
- Use CTR → when testing Content with links
⏱ Evaluation Period
- Define how long the system should wait before choosing a winner
- We selected: 15 hours
You can choose:
- Hours
- Days
📌 Step 6: Send Management
6.1 Start Test
- Immediately
- Schedule Later
👉 We selected: Immediately
6.2 Send Winning Email to Remainder
- Automatically → System selects winner
- Manually → You select winner
👉 You can choose based on your requirement
