In this blog, we’ll go through a hands-on workflow in Salesforce Marketing Cloud to understand how subscriber lists work — from creation to import/export and verification.
🎯 Objective
Learn how to:
- Create a List
- Manually add subscribers
- Understand Subscriber Key
- Verify data in All Subscribers
- Import & Export data
🔹 Step 1: Create List in Subscriber Tab
👉 Steps:
- Go to Email Studio
- Navigate to Subscribers → Lists
- Click Create New List
- Enter list name
🔹 Step 2: Empty List Created
After creation, your list will be empty.
👉 What you’ll see:
- No records
- Only structure (fields)
🔹 Step 3: Manually Add Subscriber & Define Subscriber Key
Now, we manually insert a subscriber.
👉 Steps:
- Open the list
- Click Add Subscriber
- Enter details:
- Email Address
- Subscriber Key (unique ID)
- Other fields
💡 Important Concept:
- Subscriber Key = Unique Identifier

Can be:
- Email OR
- Custom ID (recommended)
🔹 Step 4: List Gets Populated
After saving, your list will now contain data.
👉 What happens:
- Subscriber record is added
- List is no longer empty
🔹 Step 5: Check Subscriber in All Subscribers
Now verify if the user is added to the master list.
👉 Steps:
- Go to Subscribers → All Subscribers

Search using:
- Email OR Subscriber Key
💡 Key Learning:
- Subscriber is added to All Subscribers automatically
- This happens even without sending any email
🔹 Step 6: Export List Data
Now let’s export the list data.
👉 Steps:
- Open the list
- Click Export
- Choose format (CSV)
- Download file
💡 Use Case:
- Backup data
- Share with team
- Analyze outside SFMC
🔹 Step 7: Import Data (Add New Subscribers)
Now we add more users using import.
👉 Steps:
- Click Import
- Upload CSV file

✅ Result:
- New subscribers added
- Existing data remains unchanged
