Setup FTP in SFMC Using FileZilla

Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC) provides an Enhanced FTP (SFTP) connection that can be accessed using FileZilla to upload and manage files for imports, exports, and automation activities.

Follow these steps to configure FTP in SFMC using FileZilla.


Step 1: Open Setup in SFMC

Login to Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

Navigate to:

Setup → Data Management → FTP Accounts


Here you can find your FTP details:

  • Host Name
  • Username
  • Password
  • Port Number

Keep these details ready.


Step 2: Open FileZilla

Launch FileZilla Client on your system.

You will see fields at the top:

Host
Username
Password
Port







Step 3: Enter FTP Credentials

Enter the values obtained from SFMC.

Example:

Host : mc.s7.exacttarget.com
Username : your_username
Password : ********
Port : 22

Click:

Quick Connect

SFMC uses SFTP, therefore use Port 22.

 


Step 4: Connection Successful

If credentials are correct, FileZilla displays a successful connection message:

Status: Connected
Listing directory /

You are now connected successfully to SFMC FTP.

Example folders visible:

Import
Export
TriggeredSend
Safehouse

Files can now be uploaded directly for use in Automation Studio imports and exports.




Common Errors

Authentication Failed

Authentication failed

Fix:

  • Verify username
  • Reset password
  • Re-enter credentials

Connection Timeout

Connection timed out

Fix:

  • Check Host Name
  • Verify internet connection
  • Confirm Port = 22


Transfer File from FileZilla to SFMC and Populate Data Extension

After connecting FileZilla with SFMC FTP, upload the CSV file:

customers.csv

to SFMC FTP.

Flow:

FileZilla

SFMC FTP

Automation Studio

Customer_DE

Step 1: Transfer File from FileZilla to SFMC

Open FileZilla and upload:

customers.csv

to SFMC Enhanced FTP.

Upload successful.




Step 2: Open Automation Studio

Go to:

Automation Studio

Create a new automation.

From Activities select:

Data Copy or Import




Step 3: Select Import File Activity

Inside the activity select:

File Transfer

Choose file:

customers.csv

Save activity.




Step 4: Run Automation

Click:

Run Once

Process:

customers.csv

Import Activity

Customer_DE




Step 5: Verify Data Extension

Go to:

Email Studio → Subscribers → Data Extensions

Open: 

Customer_DE

The Data Extension is populated successfully 🎉
